I’m Sif: a Danish ethnologist, culture teacher, and peculiar soul.

There’re camels you must swallow- some tricky letters and occasionally your own tongue. But fear not: There’s no cow on the ice! I make sure to create a safe space to learn.Together, we explore Danish in a playful space, where hygge is the aim.

Why culture is important.

Homogeneity

Most Danes grew up with the same poems, songs, and jokes. Culture gives you the references that make conversations click.

Silence and gestures

You must master the social cues. The party is over, when "om lidt bli'r her stille" is playing, and the host starts doing the dishes.

No translation

Hygge, skattefar, samfundssind, at være dannet: words are a bit like feelings; some are just inexplicable and must be lived and noticed.

Dannet>uddannet

Uddannet means formally educated. Dannet means well-rounded: well-read, polite and thoughtful. We value formation rather than education.

“Nå” can mean:

Wrap it up, keep talking, or “I get it now.” Without culture, you won’t know which one.

Culture in Camouflage

Danes are direct with words, but subtle with culture. You’ll need curiosity, and a gentle touch, to not scare them off.

Late to the spelling-game

Danish was first standardised in 1872. Fashionably late: more than 100 years behind both German and English!

Fast changes

New words spreads quickly. If enough people say it, it lands in the dictionary: like ananas i egen juice, which jumped from late-night TV to official Danish.
